What to See in Chilapata Forest

Chilapata Forest:

Wildlife Spotting: Embark on a jeep safari or elephant safari through the dense forests of Chilapata to spot diverse wildlife, including Indian elephants, one-horned rhinos, Indian leopards, and various species of deer.

Jaldapara National Park: Wildlife Safari: Take a jeep safari or elephant safari through Jaldapara National Park to witness a variety of wildlife, including Indian rhinos, Indian leopards, and diverse bird species. Riverine Ecosystem: Explore the unique riverine ecosystem of the park, characterized by grasslands, marshes, and the mighty Torsa River.

Chilapata Safari Details 

Gypsy Safari in Chilapata Forest

The Gypsy safari is the most popular way to explore Chilapata Forest. It is conducted in open jeeps, offering a raw and thrilling ride through the dense sal forests and wilderness trails.

● Duration: Approximately 1.5 to 2 hours

● Timings: Morning & Afternoon slots (subject to forest department regulations)

● Starting Point: The safari generally starts from Kodalbasti Forest Check Post, which is the main entry gate to Chilapata Forest.

● Booking Process: You can book safaris through the Chilapata Eco-tourism office or authorized forest counters near Kodalbasti. Advance booking is recommended during peak season.

Wildlife Sightings: Indian bison (gaur), wild elephants, barking deer, leopards (if lucky), and various species of birds and butterflies. The ancient Nalraja Garh (Nal King’s Fort) is also a major attraction along the route.

Elephant Safari in Chilapata

For a more immersive forest experience, Elephant Safari is offered in some parts of the Chilapata region (depending on forest department availability).

● Experience: You’ll be seated on the back of a trained elephant, moving slowly and quietly through dense foliage, allowing close encounters with nature and wildlife.

● Starting Point: Elephant rides typically begin near Kodalbasti Forest Range Office, the same place where Gypsy safaris start.

● Timings & Slots: Usually held in the morning only. It’s advisable to check availability in advance as seats are limited and subject to forest regulations and elephant availability.

● ID Proof: Carry valid government-issued ID (Aadhar, Voter ID, etc.) for safari booking.

● Camera Fees: May be applicable depending on your equipment.

● Best Season: November to April – pleasant weather and better chances of wildlife sightings.

● Closed Period: Safari is generally closed during monsoon (mid-June to mid-September) as per forest department rules.

● Dress Code: Wear earth-tone clothes, avoid bright colors, and maintain silence during the ride.

● From Alipurduar Junction: Approx. 30 km

● From Madarihat (Jaldapara): Approx. 22 km

● From Siliguri / NJP / Bagdogra: 150–160 km (approx. 4 to 4.5 hours by road)
