About Sandakphu

Sandakphu

Sandakphu is the highest peak in West Bengal, situated at the edge of the Singalila National Park in the Darjeeling district. It is a true paradise for trekkers, adventurers, and nature lovers. The most captivating feature of this destination is the panoramic, 180-degree view of four of the five highest peaks in the world: Mount Everest, Kangchenjunga, Lhotse, and Makalu. The trekking route passes through the magnificent Singalila National Park, where you can spot diverse flora and fauna, including the rare Red Panda. During spring, the trail is beautifully decorated with blooming Rhododendrons and Magnolias.

Even if you are not trekking, you can experience the thrill of a lifetime by riding the vintage, 4-wheel-drive Land Rovers from the base camp up to the summit. Accommodations here mostly consist of cozy homestays and trekker's huts. Some of these lodges are perfectly situated so you can watch a breathtaking sunrise over the "Sleeping Buddha" (the Kangchenjunga range) straight from your window. Whether you hike the rugged trails or take the thrilling bumpy ride, a trip to Sandakphu offers a mesmerizing and unforgettable Himalayan experience.

How to reach Sandakphu

By air: Bagdogra Airport (IXB). From the airport, you need to hire a cab to Manebhanjan or Dhotrey (the primary base camps for the Sandakphu route). The drive takes approximately 4 to 5 hours.
By Train: New Jalpaiguri Railway Station (NJP). Similar to air travel, you can hire a vehicle directly from NJP to reach Manebhanjan or Dhotrey, taking roughly 4 to 5 hours depending on mountain traffic.
By Road: You can reach Manebhanjan by road via Siliguri or Darjeeling. From Manebhanjan, regular vehicles are not allowed to proceed. You must either begin your trek on foot or hire a designated vintage Land Rover from the local syndicate to navigate the steep, boulder-strewn terrain up to Sandakphu.
