Namchi, Sikkim

Namchi is a small city and district headquarter of Namchi district of Sikkim, a small well maintained Indian state situated at the lap of the Himalayas. This city is well connected with other cities of Sikkim and West Bengal by road. Namchi has taken a place on the Sikkim Tourist map. It has popular sightseeing points and tourist spots that are easily accessible from here.

How to reach Namchi

Nearest Airport: Bagdogra Airport is the nearest airport to Namchi. The distance from Bagdogra to Namchi is about 100 kilometres by road and takes more or less 4 hours to reach.

Pakyong Airport is the nearest to Namchi, but it is not accessible from all the cities.

Nearest Airport: Bagdogra Airport is the nearest airport to go to Lachung, but you can’t go directly to Lachung from Bagdogra since they need to get a permit from Gangtok to go to North Sikkim. The distance from Bagdogra to Gangtok is about 123 kilometres and From Gangtok to Lachen, it is another 110 kilometres

Nearest Bus Stand: Tenzing Norgey Bus stand is the nearest bus stand. It connects with all neighbouring cities and states. The total distance from Tenzing Norgay Bus Stand to Namchi is 89.5 kilometres. 

Nearest Railway Station: NJP or New Jalpaiguri Railway Station is the nearest railway station to Namchi. From NJP to Namchi it is about 96 kilometres by driving and takes more or less 4 hours to reach. 

Namchi Sightseeing

Chardham: Namchi Chardham is a replica of Chardham Yatra and the entire temple complex is neat and clean and well maintained. These temples resemble the real ones, though slightly smaller. This temple is located about 5 kilometres from Namchi's main market area.

Tarey Vir: Tarey Vir is a beautiful ridge, that offers a mesmerizing view of the surroundings. The edge of this ridge offers a splendid panoramic view of the confluence of the river Teesta and river Rangit – two major rivers of Sikkim and North Bengal. This beautiful place is located in Sadam, a small village in South Sikkim. Tarey Bhir is about 16 kilometres from Namchi by road.

Namchi Roapway: It would be an amazing experience to ride the Roapway in Namchi as the entire Gangtok and other mountain areas are visible while riding it.

Rabangla: Rabangla or Ravangla is one of the most visited places in South Sikkim near Namchi. The two most significant tourist places of Ravangla are Buddha Park and Ralong Monastery can be visited from Namchi on a day tour since Rabangla is only 25 kilometres by road from Namchi.

Best Time to Visit

The best time to visit Namchi is from March to May and October to November, when the weather remains clear and the viewpoints open up. The town is known for large hilltop attractions like Char Dham and the towering statue at Samdruptse Hill. From these points, you get wide views across the hills and, on clear days, distant glimpses of Kanchenjunga. Monsoon brings clouds and heavy rain, often limiting visibility.
