How to Reach

By Air: The nearest airport to Mongpu is Bagdogra Airport (IXB), which is approximately 73 kilometers away. Several domestic airlines operate flights to Bagdogra from major cities like Kolkata, Delhi, and Mumbai. From Bagdogra Airport to Mongpu: You can hire a taxi or use ride-sharing apps to reach Mongpu. 

By Train: For those preferring rail travel, the nearest major railway station is New Jalpaiguri (NJP), located around 70 kilometers away from Mongpu. NJP is well connected to major cities. From New Jalpaiguri to Mongpu: Hire a cab or take a shared jeep from NJP to reach Mongpu. The drive usually takes about 3 hours.

By Road: If you’re driving from Kolkata or other nearby cities, follow these routes: From Kolkata: Take NH-12 and continue on NH-27 to reach Siliguri. From Siliguri, take Hill Cart Road (NH-10) towards Darjeeling and follow the signs to Mongpu. The overall journey is roughly 600 kilometers and can take around 15-16 hours.

The best time to visit Mongpu is from October to April, when the weather stays clear and the hills open up. This village is known for its connection to Rabindranath Tagore, whose house still stands here overlooking the hills. The area is also known for cinchona plantations spread across the slopes. Mornings are quiet with light falling across the valley, and on clear days you may see distant views of Kanchenjunga. Monsoon brings thick greenery but also clouds and rain.
