Lataguri – Gateway to Gorumara National Park

Lataguri is a charming little town located right at the edge of Gorumara National Park, one of the most popular wildlife destinations in the Eastern Himalayan region of West Bengal. Situated in the Jalpaiguri district, the town is surrounded by lush tea gardens, serene rivers, dense forests, and small forest villages — creating a perfect backdrop for nature and wildlife lovers.

From Lataguri, you can easily get permits for jungle safaris in Gorumara National Park and Chapramari Wildlife Sanctuary by presenting a valid government-issued ID. With well-connected roads and ample facilities, the town is a great place to visit with family — including children and senior citizens.

Whether it’s spotting the Indian one-horned rhinoceros, elephants, leopards, bison, deer, or the giant squirrel during safari rides, or simply relaxing amidst nature — Lataguri promises a memorable experience. How to reach Lataguri

By Air: The nearest airport to Lataguri is Bagdogra Airport (IXB), around 70 km away. Bagdogra is well-connected to major cities like Kolkata, Delhi, and Guwahati. From the airport, you can easily book a cab to reach Lataguri comfortably.

By Train: The closest railway stations are Malbazar and New Mal Junction, both well-connected to major Indian cities. Malbazar is just 10 km away, while New Mal Junction is slightly farther but offers more train options. Cabs are easily available from both stations to reach Lataguri.

By Road: Lataguri is accessible via National Highway 27, which links several towns in the region. The drive is smooth and scenic, making it a pleasant option for those who enjoy road trips.

Lataguri is not just a gateway to the wild but also a base to explore some of the most scenic and serene destinations in the Dooars region. Here's a list of must-visit spots during your stay:

Gorumara National Park

The highlight of Lataguri, this famous national park is known for the Indian one-horned rhinoceros. It’s a major wildlife hub in the Eastern Himalayan foothills and offers thrilling jungle safari experiences.

Chapramari Wildlife Sanctuary

Located very close to Gorumara, this sanctuary is renowned for sightings of Asiatic elephants. It is nourished by the waters of Teesta, Neora, and Murti rivers, making it rich in flora and fauna.

Murti River

Murti is a breathtakingly beautiful river spot near Lataguri. The tranquil riverbank draws many visitors looking to soak in the peaceful natural surroundings of Dooars.

Samsing, Suntaleykhola & Rocky Island

All three are forest villages nestled along rivers:

• Samsing lies between the Jaldhaka and Neora rivers.

• Suntaleykhola features a charming hanging bridge over the Murti River.

• Rocky Island offers a rugged, scenic escape on the Murti's banks—ideal for nature lovers and campers.

Jhalong, Bindu & Jaldhaka

Forest Safari Timing & Price (Gorumara Side)

Note: Prices include guide charges.

The 4th (last) shift includes light snacks and a tribal dance performance, which makes it approximately ₹500 costlier than the morning shifts.

Core Jungle Safari Details

Safari Timings: 6:00 AM, 9:00 AM & 3:00 PM

Cost:

• ₹2200 per Gypsy for morning shifts (6 AM & 9 AM)
• ₹2700 per Gypsy for the last shift (3 PM)

Forest Safaris by Gypsy – Gorumara Side

Gorumara offers two exciting types of forest safaris:

1. Watch Tower Based Safari
• The Gypsy takes you to specific watch towers where salt pits attract animals like elephants, rhinos, and deer.
• Ideal for observing wildlife from a fixed, elevated point.
2. Core Jungle Safari
• A thrilling 15–16 km drive into the core jungle area.
• You are not allowed to get off the vehicle, ensuring safety and minimal disturbance to wildlife.

Safari Vehicle Info

• Each Gypsy can accommodate 6 tourists
• A registered guide is mandatory with every vehicle

Elephant Safari – Gorumara Side (Dhupjora)

•   Only one elephant safari route is available in Gorumara, and it's located in Dhupjora.

•   One guide is mandatory per safari group.

•   Tickets are issued one day before the safari date — advance booking is necessary.

•   Cost: ₹1200 per person

•   Tourists can drive to the Dhupjora Elephant Safari Point using their own vehicle or a rented one.

General Safari Information 

• The safari was earlier booked online but now it has become offline
• The guest has to stand in a queue in the ticket count to get a permit for the safari
• For all the safaris except Dhupjora Elephant safari a Guide is a must.
• Tourist should carry 2-4 copies photocopies of identity card and also carry the original.
• All safaris remain closed on Thursday across Dooars
• From 15^th June to 14^th Sept all Safaris remain closed.

Best Time to Visit

The best time to visit Lataguri is from November to April, when the forests are open and the weather remains comfortable. Lataguri is known as the entry point to Gorumara National Park, making it a popular base for jungle safaris. Early mornings and late afternoons are the best times to explore the forest. Monsoon usually keeps the park closed due to heavy rainfall.
